Stephen spent a significant amount of time in hospital, as the accident caused his left knee to shatter, with multiple orthopaedic injuries to his lower leg in two places, also his wrist and ankle. Further to this, he also sustained serious injuries to his femur.
Whilst in hospital, he underwent various operations and had physiotherapy. Stephen and his family even had to move house whilst he was in hospital, due to their previous property not being suitable for his use. Understandably, his life and his family’s lives were turned upside down, as he struggled to come to terms with what had happened to him. On discharge from hospital, his wife provided him with full care and assistance. During this time, she also had four children to take care of. Stephen was unable to return to work as a mechanic for his family run company and it is unclear whether he will ever be able to return to this position.
The other drivers insurers were not compliant at first, meaning we, as his legal team, had to issue proceedings against them. We had to continually fight for interim payments in order for our client to receive the rehabilitation that he deserved and needed. Nevertheless, given that the other party was convicted of driving without due care and attention, once the police report was released and it was clear that Stephen could not have avoided the accident, a full liability admission was made.
Stephen said this of his life post-injury:
I will work hard to get some normality back to my work and home life, but it will be a long hard struggle with absolutely no guarantee that anything will be the same as before the accident. Nevertheless, I do count myself lucky to still be here today and with my family’s support I hope to get things back to normal.
Slowly Stephen has begun to rebuild his life. He has been receiving regular physiotherapy and hydrotherapy at Russells Hall Hospital. Furthermore, through the help of his Case Manager, he is due to be receiving some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy treatment, which is being funded through his interim payments. He is well on the road to recovery and we will support him all the way.
Stephen also commented:
My family and I would like to thank both Louise and Katelyn at Fletchers Solicitors for their hard work, support and help through this difficult time. They have been great getting on with things we didn’t even know were available! They have helped us with the interim payments, getting access to a private doctor, help from an independent caseworker and generally being there to guide and help us with things that we have not been sure of. We really would recommend them to anyone in the same situation as us, as they are helpful, caring, supportive and professional.
