Our Apprentices – Q & A with Gail Galbraith

What do apprentices bring to the team?

Apprentices are eager to learn, they pick things up quickly and this allows them to assist the case handlers with their large volumes of tasks. They are keen to do well in the workplace and always happy to get stuck in and help wherever they can.

How many apprentices do you currently have on your team?

I currently have four apprentices in my team, having them as part of the team really helps with ensuring the team is running efficiently; their extra support is a big advantage to us.

Why is it important to have apprentices?

Having apprentices on the team allows file handlers to have assistance when they need it, especially when obtaining medical records, which is a big part of my team?s role. Apprentices are also enthusiastic and motivated to help the file handlers as much as possible, I have found having this attitude from them can have a positive effect to the team as a whole.

What are the benefits of employing apprentices?

In my experience, I?ve found apprentices are always enthusiastic and keen to succeed in their jobs. As a supervisor, you are able to gain experience of not just managing apprentices, but from mentoring them, you can gain valuable experience in career goal management. Jen is the assistant supervisor on the team and her first role was performance managing the apprentices on our team, this has allowed her to learn how to encourage them to achieve their goals and provide support to them, ensuring they gain the best experience whilst completing an apprenticeship at Fletchers.

What can apprentices learn from being in your team?

In my team, they learn how to deal with other organisations in a professional manner. They gain experience in handling incoming and outgoing communication from various sources, including clients. They?re able to gain skills in how to conduct themselves within a professional working environment, organising their work and file management. They receive positive and constructive feedback with regular 1:1? and are often encouraged to develop in their roles.

Why do you enjoy supervising apprentices?

I enjoy supervising apprentices as I get to see them grow in confidence and develop, they are part of the team and it is great to see them gain new skills and experience, I also enjoy providing them with valuable feedback.
