“I recently graduated from Edge Hill University with a first class degree in law. In recent years, competition to enter the legal sector has become increasingly fierce and legal experience has become a necessity for all aspiring practitioners. During my final few months, I was acutely aware of this fact and as such, I was keen to bolster my CV with further work experience. This is when I found out about Fletchers Solicitor’s vacation scheme. An application process and interview later, I had found out that I was fortunate enough to be offered a place. I was elated. Two months later, I arrived in Southport to begin the vacation scheme.
One of the most distinguishing factors about Fletchers’ vacation scheme, and a key motivating factor behind my application, was its structure. The scheme lasted for four weeks in total, twice as long as the average vacation scheme. Each week I was placed within a different department at the firm, Medical Negligence, Road Traffic Accident, Serious Injury and Costs. This rotating structure enabled me to immerse myself into the heart of a highly successful personal injury law firm by experiencing how each of their departments operated.
In recent years, employers have become increasingly focused upon candidates not only having legal experience, but the quality of that experience. During my time with Fletchers, I had the opportunity to draft documents, experience telephone hearings, receive training on a legal case management system, and experience the process of a claim from start to finish. These are the sorts of experiences you can only attain from high quality experiences, such as Fletchers’ vacation scheme, and these experiences will certainly help me to stand out as a prospective candidate in the legal job market. Although these valuable experiences were interesting and enjoyable in their own right, what I actually enjoyed the most during my time with Fletchers was being able to experience Fletchers’ culture. Throughout each department, at every level of seniority, everyone I met was extremely friendly, informative and willing to go the extra mile to make me feel welcome.
For me, Fletchers’ vacation scheme was everything that I hoped it would be and much more. It has provided me with the opportunity to employ and develop the competencies required to be a successful lawyer. I have developed both as an individual and as an aspiring legal practitioner and will look back at my time with Fletchers Solicitors as an informative, valuable, and thoroughly enjoyable experience.”
