Kevin Gernon’s Story

18th May 2015

We asked Kevin to tell us, in his own words, about his life after injury and how Fletchers had helped him during this time:

Kevin says:

My life changed permanently following a motorcycle accident in July 2012. I was hospitalised for over a week, and upon my return home I was not only left with the horrible and painful injuries, but I was also filled with worry about how I was going to be able to pay my bills or return to normal life.

My life had completely changed. One minute, I was a very active person who enjoyed all kinds of physical activities like mountain biking, taking long walks around nature parks, losing hours at the zoo, or of an evening spending hours walking around the pool table, to being sofa bound and unable to walk. I was very angry at the situation I had been left in.

I was put in touch with Fletchers Solicitors, and the first thing that struck me was just how friendly they were and how they treated me like a person, like an individual, and were able to put me completely at ease. I received a home visit from Louise Riley and her assistant Kirsty, and within minutes I knew that these were the people that I would want to represent me.

I found Louise’s professionalism superb, as was the rest of her team. I was, throughout the entire time, treated like a human being, something highly important when all your dignity has been stripped away by an accident that has left you unable to function properly. I struggled throughout my recovery, requiring several further operations, and each time I had a setback, I was given reassurance that everything would be okay.

I am me now. My injuries and disability have had a major effect on my life. They have changed me forever, but this is who I am now, and thanks to Fletchers, and to Louise and her team, I will be able to continue my life in the comfort of knowing that although I may not be able to lead the life I did pre-accident, Fletchers have made certain that I will be able to lead as good a life as possible.

I look forward to returning to the world of motorcycling, a passion that has been with me most of my life, and maybe even picking the pool cue up again and resuming an activity I have thrived in for most of my adult life. I also look forward to being able to get my independence back, so my wife and I can go back to enjoying the little things in life, like a walk in the park or a trip to the zoo.

My case settled in April 2014 at a settlement meeting set up by Fletchers. I am very pleased at the outcome, although it still doesn’t feel real (I still see only numbers). I have to say that on the day my case settled, I was exceptionally pleased with the manner in which the proceedings were conducted. It was, to me, a very simple day, and although I spent the first part of it in considerable discomfort, the whole thing was less stressful than I had imagined.

I’m saddened to think that this is the end of it all, but boy am I relieved! It feels like the one consistent thing in my life this past few years has come to its final conclusion, and for that I am a little saddened. Although I am sure I won’t feel like that when my wife and I finally get a well-deserved holiday!

I must say that I have found the past 33 months the most stressful in my entire life. I have had very good people around me (my wife mainly) who have dragged me from the pits of despair, I have had doctors and nurses, physiotherapists and others work their hardest to ‘rebuild’ me as best as possible, and they have all played their large part very well.

However, I have found working with Louise and Kirsty, also Katelyn, the easiest thing to have to deal with. I have been looked after from day one, treated like a person throughout, kept fully informed at all points of the case, and just been guided very professionally through a traumatic process with the greatest of ease. It has been my absolute pleasure to have had the honour to have Louise as my Solicitor, as it has been a pleasure also to have worked with Kirsty and Katelyn. As I have said, I am actually sad that this has come to an end in some ways, but life must move forward now.
