Is the NHS the Best Healthcare System in the World?

24th June 2014

The statement comes following a study produced by the Commonwealth Fund, a Washington based foundation. It looked into the performance of 11 countries based on evidence from doctors, patients and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The United Kingdom gained their first place position as a result of high scores in ‘efficiency, quality and access’. Out of the 11 measures of care that the report looked at, the UK came first in eight of these categories including providing effective care, safe care, co-ordinated care and patient-centred care. It also scored the highest rating for giving access to care and for efficient use of resources and beat the other countries in its care of chronically ill patients.

This is a fantastic achievement for the NHS especially as the amount spent on healthcare ranked as the second-lowest out of the 11 countries at only œ2,008 per head. America, who inputs the most money into their healthcare system at around œ5,017 per head, were rated as having the worst healthcare system due to the fact that they deny care to those in need who do not have health insurance. These findings generate an encouraging representation of the health service which supports the service’s success. It may also help to establish a stronger level of support for the NHS amongst the public.

However, with a combination of staff shortages, increasing pressure on the system and funding cuts, areas of the NHS require improvement and failures are still evident within the service. When this happens, it is important that these issues are highlighted and reported so that the patient gets the compensation they deserve and changes can be made to ensure that lessons are learned.
