Celebrity Image Expectations

28th January 2016

Not only are they expected to maintain a good image but also maintain a healthy lifestyle, to promote to their fans. It’s no surprise then, that surgery which many would deem ‘unnecessary’ is on the rise, as are fad diets and unrealistic body expectations – often to emulate the image of ‘perfection’ portrayed by so many celebrities in the public eye today.

One of the most popular ways for celebrities to promote such lifestyles, is by entering the ever growing market of fitness DVD releases. Shelves are often stacked with celebrities highlighting their rapid weight losses with dramatic before and after photos. The DVD are often coupled with a ‘healthy-eating’ plan, which they profess they’ve stuck to for the last several week, outlining their journey from ‘flab to fab’.

But how long do celebrities actually maintain the diets they work so hard to endorse? The key to a healthy lifestyle is often broken down simply to; everything in moderation with plenty of exercise, eating healthier foods and being more active. However, with so many people buying into the dieting lifestyles of celebrities, it could be questioned whether people are going to celebrities for the dietary advice.

Along with diet and fitness, celebrity culture is also impacting other parts of our lives, our image.

With Photoshop being used consistently across the board in advertising and social media accounts of the rich and famous, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ascertain whether the levels of perfection that celebrities portray is actually legitimate.

Surgery to emulate the celebrity look is nothing new. Anita Hazari, of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said ‘Some celebrities seem to treat cosmetic surgery as if it is as routine as having a hairdo and it isn’t. It is major surgery.’ Katie Price is a prime example of this, taking her once 32B breasts up to a 32GG and back down again. To undergo surgery when it is not required for your health can seem like an alien concept to some, but to others it is the only way to achieve the body they have always longed for.

With surgery always comes risks. Here at Fletchers we see examples of many types of surgery unfortunately going wrong, whether it is a medical or aesthetic reason. Surgery should always be considered carefully.
