Apprenticeships at Fletchers

28th August 2015

An interview with Jak Webster, apprentice at Fletchers.

Why did you choose to do an Apprenticeship?

The main reason I chose an apprenticeship was that I wanted to get a qualification as well as the work experience. At the time, University was not really on the cards for me, so I chose to apply for apprenticeships. I’m glad I chose this route because on my apprenticeship programme I have learnt a lot about working in a real workplace, I’ve gained a lot of hands on experience and I know I’ll be able to adapt that to any role in the future.

What have you learnt within your role that you did not expect to?

I have learnt all about employee’s rights and responsibilities, along with health and safety regulations, what is and is not acceptable in the work place. Being able to learn things that are transferable to any other job it has been helpful to gain more knowledge on the workplace.

What is an average day/week like for you?

My job involves assisting the case handlers obtaining medical records and progressing medical negligence claims. I provide support to them, often helping with projects and training new members of the team. I have been able to progress from chasing medical records to being trusted with providing case updates to clients.

Why did you want to work at Fletchers?

I did my research on Fletchers and upon reading about the progression of other employees over the past couple of years, it made me want to be part of it. They encourage apprentices and give young people opportunities to get into a working environment.

What have you enjoyed about your time at Fletchers?

Since working at Fletchers I have met many genuine people who are willing to help one another, there is always guidance and assistance there whenever I need it. I was unsure about what career path I wanted to go down and since working at Fletchers, I now know what I want to do. It has given clearer aims and I like being able to see what I can achieve by working here.

What are your plans as an apprentice for this year?

I’m hoping to complete my apprenticeship in November and then be able to secure a job at Fletchers and continue to progress throughout the firm. I hope to be able to expand on the legal knowledge I’ve gained so far, I also plan to develop my general administration skill too, so that I have more career options for the future.
