Life After Injury

We thrive on helping our customers get back to being the very best they can be, and support others who share that same passion. This page is about our customers showing what is possible after a life changing event, as well as what some people are prepared to do to help others rebuild their lives after injury.

Bike Experience Day

In July 2017 we hosted a bike experience day for some of our serious injury customers to come along and try out being on a motorbike again.

An amazing story

Our customer, Stuart Jotham was involved in a serious road accident and became the first person in the UK to have his knee rebuilt using a donor.

He recently put his new knee to use and got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend under the Northern Lights.

You can read more about his story here.

Chris Farley takes part in bungee jump

Chris is a young man who suffered a severe brain injury; this left him with a number of problems. However, before his accident Chris was an extremely active and ‘outdoors’ person. We recently received an update from Chris on how, with the appropriate support and equipment, he was recently able to take part in a bungee jump whilst on holiday.

New car and new career

In December 2013, our customer Jordan was involved in a motorcycle accident, leaving him with significant injuries including a fractured right femur and fractured left fibula and tibia.

Following his accident, Jordan didn’t want to return to riding a motorcycle due to the extent of the injuries he suffered; however, he has recently taken driving lessons and, with an interim payment, bought a new automatic car so he can continue to be as independent as possible.

Sadly, Jordan was also unable to return to his job following the accident, but has recently re-trained and secured a new job in airport security. We’re delighted to have been able to help Jordan go some way to reclaiming his life following his accident, and we hope that a new car and a new career are just the beginning!

Jordan recently sent us some pictures of his new car and thanks his solicitors for their help, “I don’t really know what to say other than thank you to Neil, Louise and everybody involved at Fletchers and from the services provided during my rehabilitation. The recent interim payment has enabled me to purchase a car and become independent again and I will forever be grateful for everything.”

Janice's Story

Janice suffered a brain injury after a motorcycle accident one Saturday morning and in this video talks about how she is still able to continue with her hobbies after her life changing injuries.

Simon's New Bike

Our customer Simon recently purchased a new BMW bike following the recent settlement of his case. Simon was involved in a motorcycle accident which left him with a dislocated hip with a fractured acetabulum, a fractured left arm and soft tissue damage to his left knee and ankle.

Simon hasn’t left his accident stop him enjoying being on a motorbike, and recently sent us some photos of his new bike and expressed his gratitude in a recent thank you card: “To Kirsty, Katelyn and all of you lovely people at Fletchers, thank you all so much for everything and all you have done… The BMW is amazing!”.

We’re delighted to see Simon is enjoying his new bike and hasn’t let his accident stop him riding!

Dave's new adapted recumbent bike

Our serious injury customer Dave Holdsworth suffered multiple injuries in a road traffic accident, which resulted in the loss of his lower left arm. Despite the pain Dave still suffers from the accident he has recently purchased an adapted recumbent bike. Getting a new bike has motivated him with his physical rehabilitation and highlights that one size does not fit all with our customers and their rehabilitation.

Back on the bike for charity

Serious injury customer, Mark Crockett, was involved in a road traffic collision in 2014, which seriously affected his life. He sustained multiple serious injuries when a vehicle exiting a side road collided into his motorbike. We handled Mark’s case and he slowly rebuilt his life, following various operations, and is now able to enjoy being a father and spending time with his family and friends.

In May this year Mark will be taking part in a sponsored bike ride to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, – the ride will coincidently take place on the anniversary of his motorbike accident and Mark is looking forward to getting back on two wheels for a good cause. Good luck Mark from all of the team at Fletchers!

Sleep ActiGraph Trial

One of our serious injury customers, Sam Endeacott, recently took part in a sleep ActiGraph study as part of his rehabilitation. The study involved Sam wearing a small watch-shaped ActiGraph sensor that monitored and measured his sleeping patterns.

This type of assessment is often used for people with neurological conditions where it’s necessary to explore aspects of activity, sleep, rest etc. The ActiGraph study offers a non-invasive in-home way of monitoring sleep and wake behaviour accurately. At the end of the assessment, the results were reviewed and a report was drafted summarising what the study found i.e. daytime activity levels, waking times during the night, total sleep time etc. Recommendations are then made to improve sleep outcomes and help with poor sleeping patterns

Fletchers Solicitors Sponsors British Rallycross Driver

Over the last 6 months, we have been proud to sponsor British Rallycross driver Graham Rumsey as he and his Citroen Saxo have travelled around the country, going from strength to strength on the race track.

Fletchers are proud to support Graham in his racing endeavours, and sponsor his Hot Hatch – our logo gracing the back of the rally car. It is wonderful to see him continuing his passion for racing after his accident and we wish him luck in his future races!

Sam's Story

Sam was involved in a motorcycle accident which resulted in him losing his lower left leg. However in this video Sam talks about how his injury hasn’t stopped him achieving his goals.

Dave Holdsworth trials the Michelangelo hand

Two years on from his motorcycle accident Dave is still undergoing intense rehabilitation, however he recently has the opportunity to sample the Michelangelo hand, a prosthetic which features built-in technology to allow more nature hand movements.

Mongol Rally

Over the summer of 2016, two fearless young men embarked upon the Mongol Rally, in aid of their friend Max and the Back Up Trust. We were proud sponsors of the intrepid duo as they took on the 10,000-mile challenge!

Ed Blackwell and Mike Parlby hit the road in a 0.8 litre Daewoo Matiz (the rally rules stated all cars must be less than 1 litre) and set off towards Siberia. The pair faced many breakdowns and perilous roads along the way, travelling through Europe, meeting the locals and sleeping in a hammock at the side of the road. They received no support along the journey, as rally rules stipulate they can’t have any support crews in case of breakdowns. Despite the rough terrain and numerous car failures, the duo successfully completed the strenuous journey from London to Ulan Ude in Russia within 5 weeks.

They are raising funds for The Max Levene Trust, set up in aid of their friend, Max, who suffered a serious spinal injury after an accident whilst paying rugby at school. Following his accident, his school set up The Max Levene Trust with the slogan ‘Remember the boy, support the man’ and have raised thousands to support Max. Ed and Mike have set out to complete the Mongol Rally to raise money for the trust.

Iain's Story

Whilst working as a crane driver, Iain was thrown from the crane cabin and suffered several spinal injuries. In this video, Iain talks about how despite his injuries he has been able to maintain that feeling of independence with the assistance of a specially modified car and house.

Jack's Story

This video is about Jack’s life after injury. He sustained a spinal injury in an accident that left him often depending on the use of a wheelchair. However, he hasn’t let it stop him becoming a positive and active young man.

Serious injury customer completes half marathon

Recently one of our serious injury customers, Paul Brand, ran the Chester Half Marathon to raise money for the North West Air Ambulance, the service used to convey him to hospital following his motorcycle accident.

In early 2014, Paul, a regular family man from Chester, had his life serious affected as the result of a road traffic accident. Whilst proceeding down a main road on his motorcycle, Paul was hit by another party pulling out from a side road, causing a collision.

The accident resulted in Paul sustaining multiple serious injuries, including a fractured wrist, collarbone, shoulder blade, ribs, and jaw, in addition to injuries he sustained to his ear; due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to hospital via air ambulance.

Paul pledged to run the Chester Half Marathon to thank the North West Air Ambulance and cover the costs of his unexpected flight.

Still riding

A motorbike accident left Mark paraplegic and needing to using a wheelchair, but he loves being back on a bike again. He now uses a converted trike which is fitted with hand controls and adapted for his injury.
